Most writers when quizzed about where they find their inspiration to write, are fairly ambiguous, and expect answers like “it just happens” or “I have to be in the mood”. However, you must admit, there are ideas aplenty around us, it just depends on how you latch on to them and choose to put them down on paper. Here are a few tips to get you writing, be it fiction or even nonfiction:
Listen – stop listening to your iPod and tune into what people around you are saying and doing. You could hear the most interesting conversations that could possibly inspire you to write something of interest. It could be anywhere, be it at the local grocery store, the supermarket, on the train or even at a bar.
Children and pets – this does not require much work. A notebook and pencil on hand is important to jot down any crazy things either of these family members attempt to do. It could make for a fabulous story.
Work – you might think you have the most boring job in the world, but perhaps you work with a great bunch of people. Maybe your work brings you in touch with people who have a story to tell, one that perhaps you could use for your next masterpiece.
Hobbies – use your knowledge to write guide books on anything from coin collecting to philately or even the art of collecting signature mugs.
Questions – keep a notebook in your handbag and jot down every question that pops into your head, no matter how lame it sounds. Then sit down every week and read through them and pick one that interests you, research it and write about it for the local newspaper.
Your life – turn your life into a story. Make modifications if you must.
