Who thought babies could have acne. But in all seriousness, they can. Baby acne is not dangerous, but if it looks like your baby is getting it, then here is some information you should know.
Baby acne is caused by ‘acne vulgaris’, a condition caused by excess oil on the skin. The oil combines with bacteria, which is trapped inside the hair follicles and thus becomes a pimple. Teenagers are normally the ones plagued with acne, due to increased hormone levels. However, Babies can get acne this way as well, as they receive high hormone levels from their mothers. High hormone levels affect a certain gland on the skin which causes it to produce more oil, which in turn causes the acne.
When babies have acne, it affects their temperament as well. They tend to get more irritated, and the irritation caused by acne makes the situation worse. Ensure that after meals, all food and milk or juice is cleaned off the face well. It is important that you are mindful of the soaps and creams you use; making sure everything you use will not irritate the baby’s skin even further. Babies between the ages of 4 weeks and 4 months are the most susceptible to contract baby acne, with it being more common amongst boys than girls. It is mostly found on the face and the back.
Please note that all skin irritations are not baby acne. Therefore, if you notice anything of the sort, it is recommended that you consult a qualified pediatrician first.
