Adult’s Guide to Dressing Up for Halloween

Most of us give up Halloween costumes and trick or treating between elementary and middle school. Once you’re an adult, Halloween costumes take on a different significance. Adult Halloween costumes are freeing, in a way. Under that mask, you could be anybody. And you can do just about anything…Still, there are a few things you should keep in mind before you purchase a costume.

  • Don’t mortify your kids, if you have them. We know that it’s fun to dress up in humorous and sexy Halloween costumes and affect a new persona, but think back to your own youth. How embarrassed would you have been to have your mother drop you off at school dressed up like a sexy border patrolwoman?
  • Do pick something that you’ll be comfortable in. For most adults, dressing up goes hand in hand with a Halloween party. Although it’s your night to be somebody else, that doesn’t mean you have to be someone who’s uncomfortable. If you’ll be sitting at the party, a thigh-length skirt might pose problems. Similarly, if your costume if just too bulky to fit into your car, you might have to rethink things.
  • Do have a sense of humor, and don’t be afraid to show off your inner fanboy (or fangirl)! Maybe you loved The Incredible Hulk as a kid or maybe you’re just feeling nostalgic for the flower power of your adolescence. This is the time to tap into those long-lost favorites and pay homage to the pop culture of the past!
