Home Staging vs Interior Design

For those looking to place their home on the market, particularly in this day and age of sinking house prices, home staging has become more and more popular.  The growth in this market has led to an upsurge in designers, some who may not actually have the right kind of experience to stage your home as well as it could be set up.  How does home staging training differ from regular interior design?

The main thing to take into consideration is what you hire different type of designers for.  When you hire an interior designer to give your home a new look, they will cater to your wants and needs.  A good interior design job will reflect your tastes and make the most out of your space according to what you plan to use it for.  The key word here is “you” – an interior designer is making a house your home.

On the other hand, when you are staging a home, you’re looking to make it appeal to a wide variety of potential buyers who may be walking through the front door.  While your home as is might be perfectly suited to you and your family, it might have limited appeal to someone with a very different lifestyle.  The purpose of staging, as taught in home staging courses, is to make your home appeal to as many people as possible.  When your home has greater “curb appeal”, there will be more interested buyers.  This means a better closing price and a home that is off the market sooner rather than later.  A designer experienced in staging will transform your home into a house.
